Laying Paving

The last of the big tiles have been laid! Probably calls for a roof shout. Paving shout? So now we are sweeping sand into the cracks to stop them from moving too much. Still got a few to do round the edges, and some brick edging to stop the garden falling in.

Then,... well then maybe a trip to the outdoor furniture shop?

How to lay paving

 

The first half of paving we laid was constrained by the retaining walls. But here on the 2nd half the paving just runs off into the garden and lawn. So we are concreting the edge 3 rows in, with a layer of concrete on the ground, then a layer of plaster sticking the pavers down. The pavers in the middle section will just be laid on sand and gap7.

 

 

 

 

Gravel Slide

Question: How do you get a trailer load of fine gravel down 2 flights of stairs?

Answer: Build a ramp.

But...if you have new paving at the bottom, you won't want it all to land on the tiles. So, reusing a bag from the scoria is a good idea.

Paving Progress

We are laying pavers! So totally exciting. Actual visible forward progress, in a very tangible way. These are laid on a thin layer of rough concrete which covers the wet clay, then fine stones, then a thin layer of sand. Looks absolutely gorgeous too.

How to dig dirt

This blog should really have been called 'How To Dig Dirt'. Seems like I have been doing nothing else for a year.

Before we began again...full of soft patches, holes and lots of water.

Digging further back towards the edge of the section.

Lots of lovely top soil came out of this hole, this is from a garden area that has been cultivated for 100 years, so lovely dark, rich soil to save and use on top of clay somewhere.

 Newly flattened out ready for a layer of gap7 stones as the under layer for the paving. Its supposed to rain soon, so we shall see how good the slope and drainage is.
